There are countless different brushes for painting and decorating – and if it were up to Hugo Rocci, he would collect every single one of them. He even travels the world in search of remarkable examples. ‘We often fail to notice the beauty of the objects we use every day because we focus solely on their function rather than their form’, he says. ‘Each brush has its own shape, colour and story. Some are handmade, others mass-produced. They are simple, everyday tools that often go unnoticed. In this series, I take a closer look at them, not only for what they do, but also for what they are.’

The Brushes series consists of unique works in oil paint, casein and pencil on canvas. Each painting depicts a single brush set against a monochrome background. Every canvas measures 50 centimetres in height, while its width is determined by the shape of the brush portrayed.

About Hugo Rocci

Brushes are just one of the many everyday objects Hugo Rocci (1989) collects, alongside items such as honey jars. The French artist lives and works in Amsterdam and studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and École St Joseph Les Maristes in Marseille. His colourful work often centres on found objects, though he also paints everyday scenes including shopfronts, advertising signs and views through windows. Working across painting, ceramics and installation, he explores the relationships between image, language, symbolism and social space.
